Case studies

Examples of how we have made Australia open for business for our clients include:

Charter Vessel - 75 metres

  • At short notice (2 days), we were able to provide a full importation option for the vessel’s 12-month stay in Australian waters.
  • The vessel went on to complete a number of charters and the tax implications of these were successfully managed through a local agent.
  • Prior to departure, the arrangement enabled tax credits of over $750k AUD to be recovered by the owner.

Commercial production - multiple vessels

  • To facilitate the Australian location filming of a popular television series, we managed the tax obligations of the production company and enabled them to access refunds of local taxes paid on costs.
  • The arrangement not only educed the impact of local taxes, but also provided an effective solution to the complexity and time-consuming process of registering and complying with the Australian tax system directly.

Game fishing vessel
- entry issues avoided

  • A charter vessel used for game fishing was shipped to Australia without obtaining prior clearances required for entry. Our solution avoided the need to exit to another country and return (which in Australia can be thousands of nautical miles) and was in place within a day.
  • Using our full suite of specialists, enabled the vessel to not only claim the GST payable on entry, but also avoid having to pay customs duty of 5% of its value through accessing concessions available in a relevant free trade agreement.
  • After completing its season, the vessel’s entry status in Australia enabled it to be held out for sale while here, avoiding the need (and cost) to export.
